Grindrod wins global ranking
Grindrod's South Africa's major shipping and freight logistics company has won
yet another award at a world shipping conference held in New York this week and
attended by over 500 delegates from around the world, Grindrod was honoured by
Marine Money International a leading global ship finance publication , with the
number 1 ranking of public shipping companies worldwide.
At an awards luncheon held at the Waldorf Hotel, New York City Ivan Clark,
Managing Director of Grindrod was presented the award. Grindrod beat 73 other
listed companies worldwide including some of the largest shipping companies in
the world.
World shipping markets have experienced record times and it was those companies
who were well placed in the dry bulk shipping business as was Grindrods who hit
the top of the table. It was fitting therefore that Tim McClure, Managing
Director of Island View Shipping was also present at the awards ceremony, as
Island View Shipping has been a major contributor to Grindrod's growth since it
was purchased several years ago by Grindrods.
Ivan Clark said 'it is just so good to see a South African company winning a
global award in a market that has substantial players worldwide. We as South
Africans are extremely proud to have won this award and to be present in New
York to receive it'.
He went on to say 'Grindrods was now a truly international player as well as a
major player in the South African shipping and logistics markets. We still
believe that Grindrod will double in size over the next three years. Shipping
markets over the last month have come off their high levels but listening to
shipping experts and economists at the Marine Money Conference, it is believed
that the current weakness is temporary as world economies continue to grow and
the demand for shipping exceeds supply.'
He said 'The same softening of the market happened last year as is happening now
and the market bounced back in the second half. Grindrods low fleet cost,
current expansion initiatives and the stronger Dollar puts it in a strong
position as it moves forward with its growth strategies'.
The current award follows Grindrod being Sunday Times Business Times South
African top listed company of 2004 and it being placed 8th in South Africa's
Global Exporter Awards.
Clark ended by saying 'We are pleased for Grindrod and for South Africa that we
are achieving these awards and are confident that we will lift our game to
achieve even better things for shareholders going into the future'.
